RIP my favorite drummer of all time, Mitch Mitchell. Died last night in Portland. This is probably my favorite drum solo he did, i'm surprised i found it.

In totally unrelated news, WHY did black kids in Oakland call these, my favorite shoes during middle school "bubblegum shoes".

It can't be because of the Ramones can it? That's too complicated. They did call Punks "Fraggles" though too.

I see a lot of black kids wearing them right now here in the East.

Oh yeah, Snoop Dogg popularized them in the 90s with his khakis, flannel shirt, wife-beater & converse style. This was like in 1986-1988.

I don't know, but I like it. Bubblegums. I think it has to do with nostalgia, bazooka joe, chewing gum, just kids and school in general. They look like they would come with bubblegum. I remember I used to step on a lot of gum in grade school wearing those things.

Also, what was mitch mitchell doing in Portland? He's british, right? I know Jimi was from Seatle....

I grew up in a suburb of Los Angeles. I remember when I was in Junior High, (late 70's) any shoe that had a white rubber toe was called a bubble gum shoe, even if it wasn't a Converse. There were no black kids where I grew up but there were some transplants (Polish) from Pittsburgh. I think this slang came from them. I always thought the term meant that the toe of your shoe looked like someone blowing a bubble with their gum.
